Inspired by my love for reading, I created the Climb into Reading series to help children become confident readers. When I’m not working on the series, I enjoy spending time with my family and exploring the outdoors, which has always been close to my heart.

My Story
Hi, I’m Karen Cammell, a proud mother and passionate educator. My journey began over 30 years ago, standing in front of a classroom filled with eager young faces as a Grade 1 teacher. The joy of watching children discover the magic of learning sparked a lifelong passion in me. As my career progressed, I took on the role of principal at a private school, where I had the privilege of shaping not only my students’ lives but also the educational environment around them.
Now, as a mother, I find immense joy in nurturing the next generation. This personal connection to childhood inspired me to create the Climb into Reading series, aimed at helping children become confident readers. When I’m not crafting stories or developing new ideas for the series, you can find me exploring the great outdoors or cherishing moments with my family, both of which are dear to my heart.

My name is Monique Mortimer. I live in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. I am a qualified Social worker but am now following my passion as a children’s book illustrator. I love illustrating fun and expressive characters. I love bright, colourful illustrations. Illustrating the Abi and Kumo book series has been incredibly enjoyable. I love the little adventures they embark on, whether through make-believe or helping out their friends. There's always so much fun to be had with Abi and Kumo.
